'She's a keeper', Don Miles of Raleigh says of his wife, Sally, as their 49th wedding anniversary approaches on Sept. 1. On a mid-June outing in a rental boat at Lake Johnson, the couple, who met in seventh grade, caught a nice stringer of fish. Worms and crickets worked as the bait. 'She caught 'em, cleaned 'em and cooked 'em AND with grits and hushpuppies!' Don said.

Gray Panthers North Give $1,000 Scholarship to MHS Student

The Gray Panthers North MHS alumni group recently awarded $1,000 in scholarship money to a deserving MHS graduating senior, Keenan Thaxter. The following is a letter we received from Ms. Carla Estridge, College/Career Coordinator, Mulberry High School.

"June 7, 2010

"Dear Gray Panthers North:

"I just wanted to take time to say thank you so much for the scholarship you provided this year that was awarded to Keenan Thaxter. He is so appreciative and will put your money to hard work. He has been accepted into a technical program in Orlando, has already paid his deposit and is ready to enroll.

"Keenan is an amazing man who has a work ethic that would shame many adults. He has come up throught the "school of hard knocks" and is a survivor. He always has a smile on his face, always says yes sir and yes mam, always goes above and beyond what is required of him, and appreciates everything that is done for him.

"I apologize for the lateness of our response to you. This truly was our fault and I apoligize for Mrs. Barnes and myself. We had one student in mind and he was unable to meet part of the admissions requirement for his school of choice. He will be enrolling but it will probably be in January. Keenan was our second choice and has met all admissions requirements.

MHS Class of '59 to Hold 50th Class Reunion!

The following notice of the 1959 MHS 50th Reunion was posted on the MHS '59 weblog by Patsy Roberts Morgan:

FINALLY! Our first commitee meeting for our MHS 50th high school reunion was held today at Fred's Restaurant in Lakeland. Attending (former names) was: Sue Stewart, Sandra Motsinger,Diane Duke, Patsy Harrelson, Patsy and Totsy Roberts.

We had such a fun time visiting and recalling our MHS memories. I can only imagine what a great time we will have when we get together for our reunion. I hope you will plan to come and be with us. CLASSMATES FROM ANY YEAR AT MHS IS WELCOME TO JOIN US AS WELL.

Due to prior commitments, the date has been changed from June 5th and 6th to June 19th and June 20th, 2009. MHS '56 Classmate Bob Biddles Passes

Robert Melvin Biddle

Olive Branch -ROBERT MELVIN BIDDLE, 69, passed away on November 5, 2008. He was an Air Force and Army veteran, and a faithful member of Trinity Baptist Church. Robert was a dedicated blood donor, a member of Young at Heart Bowling League, Strike Zone, Pioneers of America, participated in Camp Bluebird.

He loved photography, fishing, nature and the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jo Ellen, daughters; Kathy Biddle, Pamela Sprouls, and Karen Biddle, sister, Edna Bosarge, granddaughter, Britany Biddle and many nieces, nephews, in-laws, church family and friends too numerous to count.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 7, from 5-7 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral service will be Saturday, November 8 at 11:30 a.m.

Mulberry High Cow Hit By Car

MULBERRY A cow from the Mulberry High School agriculture program had a bruise Friday morning after it was hit by a car about 11 p.m. Thursday on State Road 60.

The cow is one of 23 head of cattle students in the school’s agriculture department maintain. The herd got out of the school’s 24-acre pasture through an unlocked gate, Kevin Wells, an agriculture teacher at the school said. The pasture is separated from S.R. 60 by other property, but the cattle managed to find their way to the highway, where one was hit.

Police were called and were able to herd the cattle back into the pasture.

The cow suffered a bruise but the most damage was to the vehicle, Wells said. “He is a nice gentlemen. He was more concerned with the cow than his car,” Wells said.

Wells said the cow was one of 10 designated to be trucked to a larger pasture owned by the School Board in Homeland. But now the cow will remain at the school for observation.

Wells was something of a victim himself, even though he was not there when the incident occurred. While being herded back to the pasture, the cows trampled through a vegetable garden he had growing.

Sue's kids gave her a Grey Panthers car tag for her birthday recently. This is Sue and her Grandaughter. The picture leaves a bit to be desired as it is a scan of a scan of the picture that was taken on the occasion. But anyway, you get the intent. Sue says these tags are available at Tags Plus at 6635 South Florida Avenue in Lakeland. Their phone number is 863 644-1114 and Mike and Alana Cox run it. Maybe we ought to get some "Grey Panthers North" tags made? Don't be surprised if one of these is not the door prize at our April, 2009 get together at Vogel State Park in North Georgia.

Vogel State Park was beautiful on this bright spring day in North Georgia.

Here Ron talks to Barbara and Richard about his book, "Holiday at Nana and Papa's Place: Long Story Shorts". He brought a number of the books to the Gray Panthers North get together and contributed the profits from them to the GPN reunion fund. The book is loaded with stories about the Caraker ancestors and history, Ron's family and high school friends and various shenanigans pulled by them. The book is availabe from Ron for a modest $20. and if you're nice, he'll even autograph it for you. It is a tremendous read!

This is a picture of me holding my Mother's retirement plaque from the City of Mulberry. Ruby Burdette Moses was City Clerk from 1953 until 1969. This plaque contains a piece of "Original Mulberry Tree" and was presented for "Sincere and Faithful Service." I was showing it to Keith as he snapped this picture.

We were all taking pictures of each other taking pictures of ... well, you catch my drift.

Ron and Glenda's 50th Anniversary - Renewing of Vows

Although it may seem a little late, I thought I'd share with you the pics I took at Ron and Glenda Caraker's 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration and Renewing of their Vows. It was held on Saturday afternoon, April 5, 2008, at the historic Polk County Courthouse Museum in Bartow.
About 130 guests witnessed the renewing of the vows (I didn't get any pics of that as I was in the wedding party) and helped them, along with (who else?) Elvis, celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Hope you enjoy the pictures - maybe you'll even see some folks in them who you haven't seen in many, many years.

Gray Panthers North - Get Together at Vogel State Park on April 26, 2008

April 26, 2008 was the day for the Mulberry Gray Panthers North to meet for their second annual reunion. 48 former Mulberrians attended and Vogel State Park, just 11 miles south of Blairsville, GA, couldn't have been prettier or the weather more ideal. The comeraderie was excellent and the food was delicious.

As you can see from the following pictures, a good time was enjoyed by all in attendance - we even had an appearance after lunch of Elvis as a young boy (11-year old Ryan Green from Blairsville was the Elvis Impersonator).

Most of the pictures were taken by MHS 56'er Ron Caraker and for that, we extend our utmost appreciation. A few of the pics were taken by yours truly. NOTE: If I have your year of graduation incorrect, please email me and I will correct it immediately.

Our trip to St. Augustine with Ron and Glenda Caraker

Just to show you that we can still have fun - even at our age - Ron arranged for us to spend a long weekend in St. Augustine with him and Glenda. We really played the tourist group and toured the city in one of the trolleys and saw the sites. I recommend it to anyone not really familiar with the city as it takes you to and by places of interest you would not normally go to or even hear about. To sum the trip up in three words or less, "we had fun!"

Ron met us as we checked in at the St. George Inn, which is ideally located at the City Gates and within view of old Fort Matanzas.

From l-r: Gayle, Ceil, Susie, Sue and Sally. That's Roland Frazier behind Ceil. This was taken probably the summer of 1955 at the Mulberry swimming pool. Remember the sundial over Roland's right shoulder and the fountain? The pool was closed and filled with dirt during the civil rights movement and the place is now called "The Reservation". It's an 18-hole golf course and you have to play around the peacocks and chickens. Remember when it was 3-holes? You just had to play around 6 times. Ronnie Caraker, Ronnie Lane and I played there often. Wonderful memories. This picture was pilfered from Jerry Miller's site and it belongs to Sandra Kay Motsinger. My thanks to them both.

Grey Panthers North Get Together at Vogel State Park, GA on April 19, 2007

O.K., gang. Here are the pictures you've all been waiting for! Photographer for all these great shots was our own Ron Caraker (he hires out, by the way, for your social gatherings and such) so he's not in any of the pictures until the very end of the continuation. The following three images are of Vogel State Park in North Georgia. It is three miles south of Blairsville on Hwy. 19. It is worth seeing if you're ever up this way. We tentatively plan another mini-reunion for displaced Mulberrians next year in early May. Hope you can join us!

26 displaced Mulberrians got together on Thursday, April 19, 2007, at Vogel State Park in North Georgia for a lot of reminiscing, camaraderie, and b.s.'ing for a memorable six hours. Here's a group photo of the bunch:

MHS DCT Basketball Team - 1955 or so

In 1955, a group of us DCT types decided we'd form a basketball team to play other DCT clubs. These were all Class of 1956, except John Mock, who was MHS '57. Standing, l-r: W.J. McNally, Joe Butner, John Mock, Charlie Walker. Below is me (l), and Pug Bearington. The picture was taken by Keith Hawkins, who was also a member of this precision team, in the old MHS gymnasium. We were not undefeated, by the way. (Did we win any games?) But we had fun! Charlie and Pug played barefoot. Incidentally, John, Charlie and Pug are now deceased.

I believe it also to be in front of the old Mulberry High School (pre-1956) and later (at least when we were going to high school there) A. M. Seigler Funeral Home. What a beautiful structure. Evolution of the Mulberry Tree

The images follow the evolution of Mulberry's namesake from the very early tree beside the railroad tracks to the tree as many of us '56ers remember her. She died in the early 60's and was removed. Some of the wood, however, was retained by the City for later use on plaques, commemoratives, etc.
The following image was taken looking North on Hwy. 37 (Church Street) and you can see part of the old, original Mulberry High School to the right. The ice plant was to the left. The site of the school is now Mulberry City Hall.

The old depot now houses the Mulberry Phosphate Museum.

Hey, Gang. I had some spare time during a break in the Thanksgiving weekend action and decided to post some pictures we took while we were at Reba's cabin with Ron and Glenda Caraker the week of October 15, 2006. We had a wonderful time scouting out the area and reminiscing (a lot), and we ended the week up at the get-together at Ceil and James Jordan's home in Blairsville.

The cabin is just beautiful! It's large - three levels, three BRs, three baths and lots of beautiful room. This is the view from the bottom of the very steep driveway, as you can see ...

This is the driveway exiting up from the cabin. I'm guessing it's at a 35 degree angle and not for the faint of heart (just ask Glenda and Nancy)! Above is Ron and Glenda relaxing on the spacious porch one evening. It rained a couple of days but it didn't affect our relaxing and touring the area. North Georgia is beautiful in the Fall.

Here are some scenes from the porch looking (I think) sort of North and West. The shots were taken on a couple of late afternoons.

Here's ole' Ron pointing his finger and saying; "Don't you take any more dad-burn pictures of me!" Well, I did anyway.

As Ron always says; "To make a long story short ... " (But he never does!)

Ceil (Duke - 1956) and James Jordan hosted a get together of MHS dislocated alumni at their home outside Blairsville, GA, on Friday, October 20, 2006. There were 18 or so dislocated Mulberrians and spouses at the hamburger/hot dog, beans and potato salad affair. We all had a great time reminiscing and telling tall tales! Dorine and Wendell Powell of Lakeland celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sept. 16 at Kathleen Baptist Church. They were married Sept. 28, 1956, at First Baptist Church of Mulberry.

Their sons are Robbie Powell and Ronnie Powell, both of Lakeland. They have three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.Wendell Powell retired from Publix Super Markets, Inc. after 40 years. Dorine Powell retired from Manpower after 17 years of service.

The Last Tomcat To Land in Lakeland

This information was sent to me by Keith, who was there to experience this awesome Tomcat performing in Lakeland:

LAKELAND -- Beginning Wednesday, an F-14D Tomcat will call Sun 'n Fun its home. It's the last Tomcat ever to fly in combat, a bombing mission over Iraq in February.

For free, you can see it circle around and land at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport about 11 a.m. Wednesday and make its way to the Sun 'n Fun campus. And you can see the entire Florida Air Museum for free also on Wednesday.

The Grumman F-14D Tomcat is a twin-engine, two-seat supersonic airplane that in the years since the early 1970s was the Navy's primary fighter. Its battles with Russian-built MiGs over Vietnam made both planes famous. A total of 675 Tomcats were built.

The 1986 movie "Top Gun," starring Tom Cruise as a Tomcat pilot, made the F-14 a near-household name. The film accumulated more than $350 million and at the time broke home-video sales records. The Tomcat is on a five-year loan to the museum, but will be kept in a nearby hangar.

Sun 'n Fun President John Burton said at least six planes would have had to have been removed from the museum to accomodate the Tomcat. That's why it will be housed in the hangar adjacent to Sun 'n Fun's offices.

The fighter coming to Lakeland is the oldest Tomcat left in the Navy's arsenal, it first flew in 1975 as a F-14A, returned to the factory in 1991 and emerged from a refit in 1992 as an F-14D.

On Feb. 7, 2006, it became the last F-14 to fly a combat mission over Iraq, dropping a GPS-guided 550-pound JDAM armament. The plane is a veteran of 1,762 catapult launches from carrier decks, made 1,769 carrier landings and fired 6,041 bullets.

Our ole buddy, Jim Kerce, caught these beauties a a couple of days ago, Labor Day.

He says; "LABOR ON LABOR DAY! A 20 - 22- 23- 26 INCH RED FISH. HARD WORK BUT SOMEONE HAS TO DO IT!!"

Last week, he said; "You are allowed to keep the red fish with a minimum 18 inch length and a maximum 27 inch length. Therefore the reference to {slot size} in my previous email. I will be sending more pictures tue or wed if you would like them. We are doing well with the reds this weekend."

Man! Were they ever! Fished in the Homassassa River grass flats. Hey, Jim, it's not LABOR if you love it, huh?

Classmate Al Hood Passes

It is always sad when we read an obituary of someone we knew from our youth. This is especially true when that person was about our age and we'd lost track of him or her over the years. That's how it was when Bobby Arnold let me know that Al Hood's obituary had been in the Tampa Tribune and I went to the Tribune website and pulled up Al's obit. This is how I remember Al, who was a high school friend, but with whom I lost contact after graduation. This is from my high school annual and other memorabilia:

I truly regret that I never got to ask him about his middle name of "Burdette". We were probably kin and never knew it. My great loss.

Here's a picture of the Homecoming Parade in 1954, our Junior year, which was in front of the old Mulberry High School. Caraker's "Li'l Red Truck" is to the right in the picture (I think I was driving - Ron in passenger seat) and Lamar Peace and Al Hood were on the back of the truck:

Al represented MHS well in football and basketball, too. After transferring from Pinecrest his Junior year, he lettered in football and basketball his Junior and Senior years. He was named to the Senior All-Ridge Conference football team in his Senior year. Here's the the Tampa Tribune in October, 1955, naming al to the All-Ridge Football Team.

I wish I had known Al after we graduated. I saw in the obit that he was in the US Army, and that he founded the Welding Company from which he retired. I remember his brother, Bob, who played football with us when we were Juniors. Caraker told me Bob passed away a few years ago. Anyway, Al, old friend, may you rest in peace. If any of you know Al's widow or any of their children, please let them know about this website and encourage them to read these comments.

Mulberry High School Class of 1956 50th Year Reunion to Help Celebrate School’s 50th Anniversary

MULBERRY, FL, April 10, 2006 – Anxious to help MHS celebrate its’ 50th year of educational excellence, the first graduating the Class of ’56 is combining its 50th Class Reunion with a brunch for classmates and other invited MHS graduates on Saturday, May 13, 2006, at the Mulberry High School facility. Principal George Hatch agreed with 1956 graduate Billy Mathis that it could be an exciting celebration. Class President Bobby Arnold will preside over the morning get-together.

Mulberry High School opened its doors in September 1955, and honored its first graduating class, the Class of 1956, the following June. An open house, hosted by the high school DCT club (Mr. H. H. Stewart, coordinator), greeted the Mulberry citizens, MHS students and staff in early September 1955. It was an impressive building for Mulberry at the time, housing students from 8th through 12th grades, a total of about 450 students.

The Class of ’56 graduated 74 students and all but seven survive and reside in various parts of the country. The Class was responsible for having the Mulberry High School sign erected on the front campus and most of the Class continues be active in their occasional social functions. Students from Brewster, Pierce, Nichols, Bradley Junction, Medulla, and surrounding areas started ninth grade at Mulberry as their local schools accommodated students only through Jr. High.

Mulberry High school graduates agree that MHS prepared them well for successful careers and happy lives. After 50 years the 1956 graduating class is still appreciative of their early academic, athletic, and social experiences at the school. The Reunion for class members will follow on Saturday evening at Imperial Lakes Country Club and about 50 classmates, plus spouses and significant others are expected.

The Way We Were

Judging from the cars in the background, this picture was taken ca. 1938 or so ... probably the year most of us were born. The photo belongs to Glenda Proctor Krause and it may be copied. If you like, I can email a larger image to you for printing. Just beyond the Phosphate Museum was a service station and then the Elementary and Junior High Schools. On the left was a building that later became the Mulberry Restuarant and I think the owner was ole man Barber. What great memories!
